Glucometer Error in the Anemic Patient

چکیده

We previously demonstrated that a mathematical formula successfully corrects for the effect of hematocrit (HCT) alone, improving glycemic regulation . Studies suggest multiple biologic parameters such as oxygen tension, acid base balance, and various pharmacological agents also affect the accuracy of handheld glucometers 4, . A newly released 4-channel POC analyzer measures and eliminates the majority of these interfering substances.

Anemia causes hypoglycemia in intensive care unit patients due to error in single-channel glucometers: methods of reducing patient risk.

OBJECTIVE Intensive insulin therapy in the critically ill reduces mortality but carries the risk of increased hypoglycemia. Point-of-care blood glucose analysis is standard; however, anemia causes falsely high values and potentially masks hypoglycemia. Permissive anemia is practiced routinely in most intensive care units. We hypothesized that point-of-care glucometer error due to anemia is prev...

Error rates resulting from anemia can be corrected in multiple commonly used point-of-care glucometers.

BACKGROUND A point-of-care (POC) glucometer (G1) used for critical care at our institution is inaccurate in the presence of low hematocrit (HCT) values. The purpose of this study was to analyze error rates of three additional POC glucometer brands and determine mathematical correction formulas for each. METHODS Blood samples (n = 196) from a cohort of surgical, trauma, medical, cardiothoracic...

Point - f - c re glucose mo it ring on the eonatal unitjpc

Aim: This study aims to compare the accuracy and precision of the Nova StatStrip glucometer against the Radiometer ABL gas analyser. Based on the results, to establish if the Nova StatStrip glucometer could be adopted as a reliable alternative for near-patient glucose monitoring on the neonatal unit. Methods: Seven hundred twenty-eight paired samples were collected prospectively from babies on ...

A Comparative Study of Blood Glucose Measurements Using Glucometer Readings and the Standard Method in the Diagnosis of Neonatal Hypoglycemia

Background: Hypoglycemia is one of the most common neonatal disorders, associated with severe complications. There has been a great deal of controversy regarding the definition and screening of hypoglycemia. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine a cut-off value for blood glucose level in glucometer readings. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 238 newborns at risk of ...

A study of the accuracy of the Precision Q.I.D. glucometer.

The Precision Quantum-in-dium (Q.I.D.) Glucometer was used to determine the glucose concentrations of 38 human blood samples. The same samples were also run on the OPERA Chemistry Autoanalyzer 2010 system. More than 44% of the glucometer reports had a difference of greater than 15% from the respective autoanalyzer reports. The calibration of the glucometer could be the source of the error and a...
